If it was indeed a venous snake that was seen it can only be a Canebreak Rattlesnake( Crotalus horridus) or a Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix). !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

When I ride along a riverside trail I occasionally see a snake. Usually just a black snake.

Yep. Probably harmless to us, but I still avoid them.

As long as you make noise and stay away if you see one then you’ll be fine. Snakes aren’t naturally aggressive towards humans and usually bite when afraid.

Even though that said we have a lot of copperheads around here (in Missouri) and I kill them when I see them around the house. Matter of fact I just killed one a couple of weeks ago that was hiding out under a tarp outside of my garage...

If you are bitten by a copperhead it won’t kill most healthy adults though. Just a nasty trip to the ER and an injection that’s almost as bad as the snake venom to counteract it.

Be careful out there!

Not too familiar with rattlesnakes, but usually copperhead bites are alcohol related. They are pretty shy and non confrontational, just don’t step on one and you should be fine. You pretty much have to touch it for it to attack, which is where the alcohol comes in.

There are some rattle snakes on one of the parks I like. I’ve never seen one. I did see a massive black snake in another park. I initially thought it was an old power line until it slithered away

Eh, I run into copperheads from time to time. Just give them space and you’ll be fine. I’ve seen cottonmouths hanging out on rocks in rivers too. I’ve never seen a rattler in the wild.

I run across rat snakes, garters, and king snakes pretty often. Had a garter snake living in the storage shed at my old house for about half a summer. After it moved out I looked around and saw evidence of rodents so it was good it was around. Drove my dog nuts though.
